The LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) set is part of a series of buildable models for adults, offering an escape from everyday life with display pieces to admire. The multiple display stands let you display the space shuttle model and telescope individually or together. The telescope features movable solar panels and an aperture door. The cockpit opens to reveal flight and mid-decks with seats for 5 crew members. Adjust the elevons, engage the landing gear on reentry and deploy the robotic arm. Open the payload bay to deploy the Hubble Telescope on its mission to explore the cosmos. Packed with features, this build marks the amazing accomplishments of Discovery. With 2,354 pieces, this engaging challenge lets you build the Space Shuttle Discovery, plus the Hubble Space Telescope, launched on NASA’s STS-31 mission in 1990. zip file to this MOC page that now includes Ken's document.Celebrate the wonders of space with this LEGO® NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) model building set for adults. The set, which will be released on April 1, was created in partnership with NASA. (See also here for a parts list for modification 3: ) Update 16.12.21 - Ken Hasenbein has kindly provided a supplementary PDF guide that includes part images for the part substitutions I have listed. Lego is launching a new set that is out of this world: the space shuttle Discovery and the Hubble Space Telescope. But the parts needed are not included in the inventory of parts for this mod shown below – as I appreciate this modification may not be for everyone. The parts required and a list of steps from the official Lego instructions where part substitutions are required are attached as separate files to this page. LEGO has officially announced their next direct-to-consumer set with the LEGO. This is ok however for this model at the joins and shape transitions of the wings, from the underside and in other areas of the model you can see some of these bright colored parts peeking out! I’ve made a large number of part changes for this model to ensure the finished model has only: black, white, dark stone grey and medium stone grey colours showing – as expected. LEGO NASA Space Shuttle Discovery (10283) Officially Announced - The Brick Fan. Modification 3: Swap out weird, brightly-colored parts visible in the fully assembled model To assist with instruction accessibility Lego often use a weird array of brightly colored parts in the sub-assembly of some models which are (supposed to be) covered up at the late stages of the build. See my video and related build steps in the official Lego instructions for the set for more information. I’ve not included instructions however as the mod is easy to do, all you need to do is to remove the bay doors, partially disassemble them and swap out the black Technic 1x1 round beams and Technic connectors for the same parts in white. The parts for this mod are included in the inventory. Swapping the black Technic elements out for the same parts in white gives the model a much cleaner and consistent look. However, in the scale of this model the black Technic part door hinges look distracting to the eye and are over-sized. Modification 2: Bay-door hinges in white Again, the designer of this Lego model was aiming to replicate the real-world Shuttle's black color bay door hinges and look. Step-by-step instructions are provided in PDF format to download from this page. The parts listed in the inventory are the extra parts you will need to modify your set to build the replacement tail fin rudder. I’ve designed an improved wedge-brick and Technic element built tail-fin that: - fits in seamlessly with the standard tail fin assembly, - looks more accurate to the real-world shuttle (white rudder with a full black outline) - and is an easy mod to do, even after you have already assembled the model. But unfortunately, it does have some design flaws, that luckily, are easy to fix! (Explanation & showcase video link: ) Modification 1: Tail fin rudder re-design While I think the designer of the model was aiming to mimic the real-world Space Shuttle's tail fin that can split open to act as an air-brake - the wedge-plate design looks terrible and is not harmonious with the smooth and integrated look of the rest of the model. The Creator Expert Shuttle Discovery set (#10383) is a beautiful model.
